Progressive Care Centre

Progressive Care Centre, Jura

What will red deer not eat?! That was the main challenge facing Community Links Scotland when designing a garden space for this innovative building.

Jura Progressive Care Centre is for Jura residents who require residential and nursing care but want to stay as close to their homes and families as possible. It comprises communal social areas as well as five self-contained, one bedroom properties and a respite facility.

The creation of the centre was made possible due to co-operation between the local community, NHS Highland, Argyll and Bute Council, West Highland Housing Association and the Scottish Government.

On completion of the building and six adjacent socially rentable houses, West Highland Housing Association engaged Community Links Scotland to develop a landscaping project for the entire complex including a garden space for the elderly residents of the Care Centre. Community Links Scotland sought the views of Care Centre staff and residents and learned that the priorities were views of the sea, windproof bin areas, surfaced drying areas and plants less palatable to hungry deer! The in-house design team produced plans and sourced the funding to support a project implemented jointly through a local contractor and a small squad from Argyll and Bute Employability Team.
