Route 81 Youth and Community Centre

Centre 81

Route 81 Youth Project Limited ('Route 81') was established in 2002 and has been operating up to the present time out of shared and borrowed accommodation. Working with CLS from 2006 the group prepared an options study and business plan leading to the former East Dunbartonshire Council Outdoor Education Centre being identified as a suitable building. Working with Dunbritton HA and CLS, Route 81 purchased the building using funding from the Scottish Government and National Lottery in 2009.

To upgrade the building CLS attracted Lottery funding, Scottish Rural Development Priorities funding (the first award in Scotland), Climate Challenge Fund, CARES and Scottish Power Green Energy. Accessing the funding was a challenge but greater still was the drawing down of the various funding streams many of which were to fund particular aspects of the building.

The building will in the first instance provide a youth facility as a resource for the young people of the area, secondly, a community centre for the local community and thirdly, a commercial residential outdoor activity centre.
